Newsletter - June 12

Hello Summer,

I just returned from the John Byrne Band's Summer 2018 Mid-West Tour. We drove through 10 states making it as far west as the Rocky Mountains. It's the farthest west I've even been. Every night we played a different venue. It was fun and at the same time I'm glad to be back in Philly. The John Byrne Band plays a few Philly area gigs later in June including:

June 23 - Havertown Irish Festival at Manoa Shopping Center, Philadelphia, PA
June 24 - Philadelphia Irish Festival at Penn's Landing, Philadelphia, PA
June 29 - World Cafe Live (downstairs), Philadelphia, PA

While I was away, I received news of some current and upcoming albums on which I was involved. Last year's Kitten Kaboodle album with the Cat's Pajamas won a 2018 Parents' Choice Silver Honor Award and the NAPPA and Hot Diggity awards.  Shawn Kilroy released Barron Von Coffin on which I played trumpet for "Dreadlock Housepainter." Incidentally, Shawn released another E.P. in November 2017 on which I played trumpet for "Don't Let Anybody Talk You Into Being Somebody" from Cheap Sneakers

I appeared on the Blair Brothers' remix of "Heartless" on The Sharpest Blade Remixed originally by Viro the Virus. My old college pal Adir L.C. is preparing to drop a new album in July on which I recorded a stable of horns. Mitski announced her next album Be the Cowboy for release August 17 on which I played trumpet and mellophone.

July features two live performances by York Street Hustle. Join Philly's Premier 1960's Motown/Soul Band for a late night summer party Saturday, July 7 @9:00PM at La Peg at Fringe Arts (140 North Christopher Columbus Boulevard, Philadelphia, PA)! EVENT The following evening, Sunday, July 8 @6:00PM, we're playing the Concerts Under the Stars concert series in King of Prussia, PA. The concert will be held rain or shine at the Township Building Park. In the instance of inclement weather, the concert will be moved indoors.

I'll be performing with my own band Saturday, July 28 at a house concert (514 Ballytore Road, Wynnewood, PA). The evening's music serves as the soundtrack to the emerging night sky. The night sky should clearly feature a handful of planets including Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn, as well as a 98% luminous waning moon in apogee. Sunset is 8:18pm; moonrise is 9:00pm, during which we premier the new composition "Apogee Moon" written specifically for this event. The piece is primarily improvised ambient jazz representing the Zodiac constellations. Following "Apogee Moon" will be a set of Psychedelic Jazz. The band features me (trumpet, synthesizer), Drew Parker (guitar), Dan Finn (keyboard), Ben Basile (bass), and Ben Diamond (percussion). Contact me or Janet Schreiner for further details.

Looking forward to seeing you at the upcoming shows!
